I'm with you. I think it's a minor flaw, and it sounds like the editorial process replaced one name-drop problem with another. But if his vision of the brands this girl would be wearing dated the story, perhaps that should've been a clue that brand names date stories (and I just had to Google Chuck Taylors, too). In my own writing, whether my (admittedly younger) characters are boys or girls, I might mention kinds of clothes - jeans, skirt, etc. - but I see no reason to mention a brand unless it's important to the plot.

This is a tough one. I always worry that if I include a character whose background is different from mine, it will come off as if whatever qualities I give that character are supposed to represent his or her whole group (which - obviously, I hope - is not the case). Maybe as more diverse characters become more and more common in books, there'll be less of a need to think so hard about this aspect of their overall characters.

Good point! Shoshana wondered what the heck happened to Mexico and Canada. I tried coming up with a timeline: 2025 = it's the end of the world as we know it. US/Mex/Canada splits into Districts. Over, what? 100 years they specialize, Capitol assumes power. Rest of the world laughs their tails off and ignores us (because we're separated by two really large oceans) 2124 = Dark Days. 2125 = First Hunger Games. 74 years later: Hunger Games the Book.

Another post topic is germinating: which is better - we readers getting the pleasure of filling in the gaps? Or should the writer figure everything out in her head first to help with plausibility...the skeleton of the story that no one sees.
